Ultrasound Preparations
Some studies or procedures may require preparation before your appointment, such as:
Pelvic Ultrasound:
- Empty your bladder 1.5 hours before your appointment time. (Note this is the last time you may empty your bladder until after your scan).
- You will need to finish drinking one litre of water 1 hour before your appointment time. Do not empty your bladder once you have completed drinking.
It is important to arrive for your scan with a full bladder.
Renal Ultrasound:
- 6 hours fasting. (Nothing to eat or drink).
- Empty your bladder 1.5 hours before your appointment time. (Note this is the last time you may empty your bladder until after your scan). You will need to finish drinking one litre of water 1 hour before your appointment time. Do not empty your bladder once you have completed drinking. It is important to arrive for your scan with a full bladder.
Abdominal ultrasound:
- 6 hours fasting (Nothing to eat or drink).
- No smoking and no chewing gum on the day of your appointment.
*If you take medication (tablets or vitamins) in the morning, you may take your medication with a very small amount of water
Pregnancy Ultrasound (under 12 weeks):
- Empty your bladder 1.5 hours before your appointment time. (Note this is the last time you may empty your bladder until after your scan).
- You will need to finish drinking one litre of water 1 hour before your appointment time. Do not empty your bladder once you have completed drinking. It is important to arrive for your scan with a full bladder.
*Please advise us when you are booking if you think you may be over 12 weeks.
FNAB (Ultrasound guided biopsies and interventional procedures):
You must have a diagnostic ultrasound study before booking for a biopsy/ interventional procedure.
- Please bring your previous films and reports with you.
- Come in approximately 20 minutes before your appointment time.
- There is an additional cost of $80 per lesion which Medicare does not cover.
Several preparations may be (but isn’t always) necessary before this procedure.
- No use of aspirin or aspirin substitutes (e.g. ibuprofen, naproxen) for one week before the procedure
- No food intake a few hours before the procedure;
- Routine blood tests (including clotting profile) must be completed two weeks before the biopsy
- Suspension of blood anticoagulant medications
- Antibiotic prophylaxis may be instituted.
